Designing a chart that lowers your heart rate

Most finance apps shout in red and green. We spent four months making a forecast you can read in two seconds.

Coffee cup on a table in dappled morning light

Most finance apps speak in red and green. Up is good, down is bad, and every small dip feels like an alarm. We wanted the main chart in Fathom to do the opposite: show you the future in a way you can read in two seconds and then put your phone away.

Fewer colors, more meaning

History is drawn in a calm neutral. The forecast is a single warm line. Around it sits a soft band that widens with time, because a forecast three months out is honestly less certain than one three days out. Showing that uncertainty made the chart feel more trustworthy, not less.

Rules we kept

  • One accent color, used only for what needs attention

  • No gridline heavier than the data

  • The low point is always labeled in words, not just a dot

The result is a chart that rarely shouts. When it does, you listen.
