How a freelancer smoothed out a lumpy year

Irregular income does not have to mean irregular stress. A designer shares the forecast that got her through a slow winter.

Sunlit desk with a lamp and a glass of water

When your income arrives in irregular lumps, a normal budget feels like trying to read a clock that only ticks some of the time. A strong month makes you feel rich. A quiet one makes you feel broke. Neither feeling is accurate.

Paying yourself a salary

The fix that worked best was simple: every invoice went into a holding account, and a fixed amount moved to everyday spending on the same day each month. The forecast made the size of that amount obvious, because it showed exactly how long the holding account would last through a slow stretch.

I stopped asking whether this month was good. I started asking whether the next ninety days were covered.

What changed

Spending did not change much. Stress did. Knowing that February was already paid for in November meant a quiet winter felt like a plan instead of a problem.
